The importance of taking FOLATE for three months before trying to conceive

Updated: Oct 30, 2023

One of the most well-researched and crucial nutrients in the world of fertility is folate.

Today, we look at why it's so important for women to supplement with folate three months before they even start trying for a baby.

Folate/folic acid supplement when trying to get pregnant

What is Folate?

Folate is a B-vitamin, essential for many processes in the body. It's naturally found in various foods, such as leafy green vegetables, lentils, and wholegrain foods. Its synthetic form, known as folic acid, is often found in high street supplements and added to processed foods.

Up to 35% of women, of reproductive age, in the UK are are deficient in folate. it can take up to 3 months to fully restore depleted folate stores. This essential nutrient is vital to support a healthy pregnancy.

Did you know that the oral contraceptive pill can deplete folate levels. It can take up to 3 months, after stopping the pill, for folate levels to build back up.

Why is Folate So Crucial for Pregnancy?

  1. Neural Tube Defect Prevention: One of the primary reasons folate is recommended before and during early pregnancy is its role in preventing neural tube defects (NTDs) in babies. NTDs are severe birth defects of the brain and spine, and they occur very early in pregnancy, often before a woman even realizes she's pregnant.

  2. Supports DNA Synthesis: Folate plays a pivotal role in DNA synthesis and repair. This is a vital part of the developing egg, which takes place across 3 months prior to the egg being released, at ovulation. Rapid cell division and DNA replication occur during the early stages of pregnancy, having optimal folate levels ensures the cells develop correctly.

  3. Promotes Healthy Placenta Development: Folate aids in the formation of the placenta, which supplies the fetus with the necessary nutrients during pregnancy.

  4. Reduces Homocysteine Levels: Elevated levels of the amino acid homocysteine have been associated with early miscarriage and other pregnancy complications. Adequate folate intake can help keep homocysteine levels in check.

Why Start Three Months Prior?

The neural tube, which becomes the baby's brain and spine, forms during the first 28 days of pregnancy. Considering many women might not be aware they are pregnant during these early stages, having sufficient folate in the system is crucial. Starting supplementation three months prior ensures:

  • Egg Quality: Oocyte (egg) maturation, takes up to 3 months, it involves rapid cell division. Folate is essential for proper cell division, ensuring that eggs mature correctly during their growth phase. Any disruptions in this process can lead to chromosomal abnormalities, potentially contributing to pregnancy loss..

  • Building up Optimal Levels: It allows time for the mothers body to build up and maintain adequate levels of the nutrient.

  • Preparation for Rapid Cell Division: The earliest stages of fetal development involve rapid cell division. Ensuring your body is primed with necessary nutrients can support this crucial phase.

Natural Sources vs. Supplements

While a diet rich in folate from foods like spinach, lentils, and asparagus is excellent, it might be challenging to get the recommended amount from food alone. Hence, a supplement can ensure you're getting the right amount. However, always consult with a professional before starting any supplementation.

As a fertility nutritionist, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of laying a healthy foundation for your baby-to-be. By starting your folate supplementation three months prior to trying, you're not only optimizing your own health but also ensuring the best start for your future child.
